Teachers

The new statutory framework for the early years foundation stage and the new reading framework: teaching the foundations of literacy, both frequently refer to poetry  – they highlight the importance of saying, learning, reading and writing poems from the early years onwards.

This increased focus on poetry and the highlighting of the cross-curricular benefits provides an exciting opportunity for you to explore different types of poetry, encourage reading for pleasure, creativity, confidence and performance.

My poetry writing manuals offer a helping hand. These books include a wide range of workshops, cross curricular links, poems to read, perform, enjoy, and to use as a springboard to group or independent writing.

There’s also an A to Z of poetry - packed with helpful info, definitions, explanations and further activities. Additionally, there's a list of poets and a mega bibliography of poetry books some classic, some contemporary, some linked to themes - offering a really diverse range of poetry for everyone to enjoy!

Walter Tull's Scrapbook

In scrapbook format, using authentic documents and photos, we learn the story of the first black professional footballer, Walter Tull – who went on to become the first black officer in the British Army. It’s an inspiring story with an important message about courage, endurance ,and overcoming discrimination.

This is an outstanding piece of work in which Michaela has encapsulated the life of an often forgotten man. She will grab the attention of our younger generations, and hopefully compel them to achieve greatness in their lives too.
— Clarke Carlisle, Chairman of the Professional Footballers Association
There is a great need in primary schools for information about strong black role models and Walter fits the bill on so many levels... this is probably the most accessible [book on the subject] for the young reader... A very good addition to the school library.

Respect

Respect also tells the story of Walter Tull – but this time his life is told as a story as a quick read. The book is very popular with all sorts of readers but has proved particularly successful with  dyslexic or reluctant readers who enjoy a story that is gripping, well-paced, easy to read, inspiring – and true.

A fantastic book. Really moving and interesting. One of the few books I really like!

Reaching the Stars

In this year of celebration of the Suffragette movement, Macmillan Children’s Books are publishing Reaching the Stars - a collection of new poems celebrating extraordinary women and girls.

The poets Jan Dean & Liz Brownlee and of course - Michaela Morgan - all have stories to tell. Their own lives are fascinating but here they focus on stories of women and girls – some famous, some anonymous, some individual, some representative, some historic, some mythic.

Wonderland : Alice in Poetry

I come from long ago, from a grey place of cramped, dingy-looking, brick- hard houses. Narrow streets, narrow lives, very little kindness.

I went to the local primary school where on Fridays we had class library time. The books were kept in a folding metal contraption. It would be wheeled to the front of the classroom, unlocked, unfolded and the books would be revealed.
